Five Fun Things To See and Do in DFW This Fall

It's fall, y'all! The familiar sights, sounds, and flavors of the season are more welcome than ever. It’s a great time to catch a cool-weather football game while savoring a pumpkin spice treat. Fall is also a great time to explore community events with friends and family. Check out our list below for some ideas to start—or build on–a fall family tradition this year.

1. Autumn at the Dallas Arboretum

From now through November 5, the Dallas Arboretum presents their 18th annual fall festival, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!" Visitors can see the Peanuts Gang and themed pumpkin houses, brought to life with 100,000 pumpkins, gourds, and squash arranged throughout the garden.

Programs include Mommy and Me Mondays, Tiny Tot Tuesdays, a hay-bale maze, and “pick your own” pumpkins from a pumpkin patch. The festival also features a food, herb, and vegetable garden. Known as A Tasteful Place, the garden is a place to catch free cooking, floral, and horticulture demonstrations. Local bands will play live music on weekend afternoons. The seasonal events are too many to list here; visit the website for information, schedules, and ticket purchases.

2. Texas State Fair

For some families, fall isn’t complete without a trip to the Texas State Fair! From September 29 until October 22, you can take in the unique events and attractions while satisfying your craving for corn dogs, funnel cake, and other fair food under the watchful gaze of Big Tex. Click here for more information and to reserve your tickets.

3. Butterfly Flutterby

Fall also brings something unique to the skies above DFW: monarch butterflies, passing by on their migratory route from Canada down to Mexico. Celebrate these colorful reminders of autumn at the free 26th annual Butterfly Flutterby at the Grapevine Botanical Gardens at Heritage Park on Saturday, October 21. Kids and pets are invited, too! Find more information here.

4. Turkey Trot

For families on the move, the 56th Annual Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot will continue its Thanksgiving Day race tradition on November 23. This popular multi-race event is in-person but also has a virtual option. All participants can choose either the 5K or 8-mile race. Individuals, families (strollers are allowed), and pets on leashes are all welcome to participate. Virtual Trot at Home racers will self-time for virtual rankings. All proceeds will support the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas programs for children, adults, and families. You can find the most up-to-date information and register on the Turkey Trot website

5. Trunk or Treat at Chase Oaks

Chase Oaks Church is excited to bring back our popular Trunk Or Treat event on the weekend of October 28-29. Invite your friends, neighbors, and family to put on kid-friendly costumes and head to your nearest Chase Oaks campus. Trunk hosts will provide fun activities and treats for participants from the trunks of their vehicles. Chase Oakers always go all-out for this community-wide event! There is no cost to participate. Trunk hosts will need to provide their own decorations and treats to hand out. Keep checking our Featured Events page for more info soon!
