Leave a Legacy

Discuss Together

  • What is something you desperately wanted 10, 20, or 30 years ago that quickly lost its luster or today seems silly?
  • Read Proverbs 20:7. What does it mean to have integrity? How would you know if you had it?
  • The Bible has a lot to say about leaving a legacy. Read the following passages: Proverbs 22:1; 2 Timothy 1:5; 4:6-8; and 1 Corinthians 13:13. What can we learn about what leaving a good legacy looks like?
  • Ryan talked about living by “Funeral Rules” as a way to think about leaving a legacy. He asked us to think through two questions: “Who do you want to be on the first two rows at your funeral?” and “What do you want them to say?” How would you answer those two questions?
  • Has anyone modeled a legacy of “crazy faith” in your life? What about “unconditional love” and “radical generosity”? How did he or she demonstrate these qualities to you?
  • How much do you think about the type of legacy you’re leaving during a normal day? What would it look like to build into your legacy this week? What needs to change?

Next Steps

In 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, author Stephen Covey talks about beginning with the end in mind. He says effective people know what they want said of them at their funeral, and have clarified their values accordingly. Take time this week to think through your core values. Try writing down a few words, phrases, or statements about the things that matter most to you – things you want said of you at your funeral.
