5 Fun Things To Do This Fall

It's fall, y'all! The familiar sights, sounds, and flavors of the season are more welcome than ever. It’s a great time to catch a cool-weather football game while savoring a pumpkin spice treat. Fall is also a great time to explore community events with friends and family. Many local venues have adapted to the current pandemic by offering old favorites with a creative twist. Check out our list below for some ideas to start—or build on–a fall family tradition this year.

Autumn at the Dallas Arboretum

From now through October 31, the Dallas Arboretum presents their annual fall festival.  This year’s theme, “Bugtopia,” gives bug-lovers an opportunity to learn about and interact with beneficial insects, both live and in topiary form! Take photos in the Pumpkin Village amidst the pumpkin houses, gourd and squash displays, or over 150,000 autumn flowers.

Programs include Mommy and Me Mondays, Tiny Tot Tuesdays, a hay-bale maze, and “pick your own” pumpkins from a pumpkin patch. The festival also features a food, herb, and vegetable garden. Known as A Tasteful Place, the garden is a place to catch free cooking, floral, and horticulture demonstrations. Local bands will play live music on weekend afternoons. The seasonal events are too many to list here; visit the website for information, schedules, and advance ticket purchases.

Texas State Fair/Fair Food

For some families, fall isn’t complete without a trip to the Texas State Fair! Take in the unique events and attractions, and satisfy your cravings for corny dogs, funnel cake, and other fair food under the watchful gaze of Big Tex. Click here for more information and to reserve your tickets.

For those who want to try fair food a little further north, Legacy Food Hall is offering their own spin on this tradition with Fair Fest. The weekend of October 9-12, vendors at Legacy Hall will serve up some favorites including turkey legs, fried Oreos, and more. The Box Garden will also feature a Red River Shoot-out Watch Party. Grab your Texas or O.U. gear and come prepared to cheer on your team. Tickets and table reservations are required. For more information, click here.

Turkey Trot

For families on the move, the Annual Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot will continue its Thanksgiving Day race tradition on November 25. This popular multi-race event is in-person but also has a virtual option.
All participants can choose either the 5K or 8-mile race. Individuals, families (strollers are allowed), and pets on leashes are all welcome to participate. Virtual Trot at Home racers will self-time for virtual rankings. All proceeds will support the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas programs for children, adults, and families. You can find the most up-to-date information and register on the Turkey Trot website

Hall’s Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze

Enjoy some fresh air at Hall’s Pumpkin Farm in Grapevine. This pumpkin patch opens for the season on Friday, October 1. You can challenge yourself in the 2-acre corn maze, visit farm animals, take a fun hayride with the family, and grab a pumpkin or two. The farm is open Wednesdays through Sundays.

Visit here for more information.

Trunk or Treat at Chase Oaks

Chase Oaks Church is excited to bring back our popular Trunk Or Treat event, the weekend of October 23-24. Invite your friends, neighbors, and family to put on kid-friendly costumes and head to your nearest Chase Oaks campus. Trunk hosts will provide fun activities and treats for participants from the trunks of their vehicles. Chase Oakers always go all-out for this community-wide event.  There is no cost to participate. Trunk hosts will need to provide their own decorations and treats to hand out. Look here for more information. We'll see you there!
